Most decipherments of early and unknown writing systems before the
application of more distributionally oriented analyses since the
unravelling of Linear B by Chadwick, Ventris and Kroeber have heavily
relied upon the study of personal and place names in bilingual texts
(cf. Aalto 1945, Doblhofer 1957;1960, Pope 1975, Parkinson et al. 1999).
The crucial, yet peculiar position of names in writing thus has a long
pedigree in the study writing systems, but it has never been fully
explored. The IXth “Idea of Writing” conference, to be held in Paris
between 25 June and 27 June 2012 hopes to fill this gap by bringing
together specialists in the history and theory of writing systems from a
wide range of disciplinary backgrounds, to address the theme of “names
in writing”.

The organisers solicit papers including, but not necessarily limited to the following conference topics:

La prochaine<strong> journée d'études du projet de recherche <a href="http://www.msh-lorraine.fr/index.php?id=345">ALIENTO</a></strong> (axe 2) se déroulera dans les locaux de la MSH Lorraine:<strong> VENDREDI 30 MARS 2012 </strong>dans la salle internationale (3e étage - 91 avenue de la Libération, à Nancy).<br />
Le thème abordé sera:<em><strong> Quelle sémantique pour les proverbes?</strong></em><br />
La journée rassemblera trois sémanticiens spécialistes des proverbes: <strong>Georges Kleiber, Pierre Cadiot, Yves-Marie Visetti.</strong><br />
Le projet Aliento (<a href="http://www.aliento.eu" target="_blank">http://www.aliento.eu</a>) vise la constitution et l’exploitation d’une base de données d’énoncés sapientiels, ce qui conduit à se poser à leur propos, mais aussi en amont, des questions relevant notamment de la sémantique lexicale et référentielle. La journée rassemblera ainsi trois sémanticiens reconnus, également spécialistes des proverbes ou des énoncés parémiques: Georges Kleiber, Pierre Cadiot, Yves-Marie Visetti.<br />
En termes de sémantique générale, Georges Kleiber cherche un rapport stable entre mots ou unités signifiantes et monde de référence; pour Pierre Cadiot et Yves-Marie Visetti, les unités signifiantes sont avant tout des formes plastiques, ajustables aux situations d’interlocution. Avec les énoncés parémiques se posent d’autres questions: quelles sont leurs propriétés sémantiques? Quelles propriétés permettent de caractériser les différents types de parémies? La généricité est-elle caractéristique des proverbes? Sur ces points, les intervenants ont certes des conceptions différentes mais aussi un certain nombre de points d’accord, la co-construction du sens ou la métaphoricité constituante des proverbes par exemple; la « confrontation » des points de vue n’en sera que plus enrichissante…<br />

Le séminaire 2011-2012 sera, comme les années précédentes, polythématique. Il sera partagé entre la linguistique arabe, la linguistique sémitique et afro-asiatique et la linguistique de contact. S’agissant de la première, nous aurons six interventions, trois sur l’arabe standard et trois sur l’arabe non-standard. S’agissant de la seconde, nous aurons quatre interventions, une sur le proto-sémitique, une sur l’hébreu, une sur l’araméen, et une sur le berbère. S’agissant de la troisième, enfin, nous aurons une intervention sur le persan.<br />
