The Programme on the Study of the Humanities in Africa (PSHA) at the University of the Western Cape invites suitably qualified candidates to apply for masters, doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships for the 2013 academic year. The PSHA is an exciting research platform based in the Centre for Humanities Research (CHR) dedicated to redefining Humanities research in and about the postcolonial world and making sense of the driving forces of globalization and nationalism. It is backed by a generous grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

The PSHA encourages scholarship that rethinks foundational categories of culture, identity, nation and citizenship through critical reflection on the humanities and postcolonial modernities. The fellowship awards are aimed at fostering critical dialogue in an academically engaged and supportive environment on the key themes of the PSHA.

In 2013 the PSHA will be involved in discussions on the broad theme of the subject of the humanities. We invite applications working on questions of political subjectivity and the politics of the governed, the history and theory of the humanities and social sciences in the global south, aesthetics and politics, the humanities in the age of anti-racisms of the university.

SELECTION PROCESS

Selection of candidates will be based on the strength of academic achievement and commitment to the intellectual outlines of the PSHA and the CHR. Successful candidates will become Andrew W. Mellon Fellows of the CHR. Those selected to this prestigious fellowship programme will be required to participate in a reading programme with other recipients of the grant and faculty members.

Successful candidates will be required to be present on campus during the relevant academic semesters unless granted leave by the fellowship board. All Postdoctoral fellows will be required to produce at least one peer-reviewed journal article, which when published should contain appropriate acknowledgement of the University of the Western Cape. Postdoctoral Fellows are also required to show substantial progress towards publication of a monograph. The Centre for Humanities Research at UWC, to which fellows will be affiliated, offers a supportive scholarly environment for pursuing research and academic exchange. The centre hosts a weekly seminar series where prospective candidates can present their research and solicit feedback from an interdisciplinary forum of academic staff and graduate students. Fellows are required to participate fully in the seminar series. The centre also provides activities and programmes, postdoctoral fellows will contribute to the shape of graduate studies by making available, through participation in scholarly discussions and debates.

FELLOWSHIP AWARDS

In 2013, the Programme will offer fellowships at the postdoctoral level in disciplines associated with the humanities. The awards cover a monthly stipend which can be used to cover travel costs, accommodation and basic research expenses. The awards may be supplemented with National Research Foundation research grants.

They will be selected by a panel of core faculty associated with the PSHA and the Dean of the Faculty of Arts.

Papers for Distribution before the Conference: September 30, 2012

This is a conference dedicated to study the life histories of religious activists from the perspective of the psychology of religion. It will focus attention on Islamic activists involved in some or the other form of religious activism since the 1970s. Papers will examine personal trajectories over a long period of time, focusing on initial participation through to their present positions. For the purpose of this conference, Islamists will denote individuals who have come together to (re)establish Islam on a social or political level.

Background and Rationale
The public resurgence of religion in general and Islam in particular has taken many forms over the last few decades, and scholars grapple with their meaning and significance for individual, state and society. There is unanimity among most scholars of religion that late modern religious revival does not mean a return to traditional roots, but subtle and profound transformation for individual meaning and social action.
With respect to Islamism, much more has been written on the social significance of these transformations than on their personal, psychological dimension. Given the dominance of the secularization perspective until the 1970s, studies have turned to the social significance of religious revival for identity formation (Berger 2000). James Beckford argued that the impact of religion was inevitable given the questions posed by post-modernism (Beckford 2000, 176). And Ortiz, looking at the transformation of religion over a long period, argued that globalization provided an opportunity for ethical engagement beyond the bounds of particular national borders. He saw an uneasy competition between the social function of religions, and nationalism. Globalization weakened the power of the nation, thus providing grounds for religion to re-emerge but with an ethical focus (Ortiz 2003). Some studies on Islamic radicalization have pointed to parallel ethical manifestations among members (Devji 2005). In general, it is clear that such studies raised question about the renewed place of religion in public life, and the attempt to identify its important features.
This preoccupation with the new sociology of religion may be contrasted with a critical perspective on the very formation of a religious discourse in modern times. Talal Asad’s path-breaking Genealogies of Religion: Discipline and Reasons of Power in Christianity and Islam (1993) may be regarded as a milestone in this regard. He regarded religion as a discursive strategy rather than a symbolic code to be read: “Religion has been part of the restructuration of practical times and spaces, a rearticulation of practical knowledges and powers, of subjective behaviors, sensibilities, needs, and expectations in modernity” (Asad 2001, 221; see also the application to Islam in Asad 1986). This line of analysis has been followed by a number of others who have deconstructed the application of religion and religious discourse in modern politics and general public discourse (Chidester 2004; Veer 2002; Fitzgerald 2000; Chidester 1996; Fitzgerald 2007; Vial 1999). Religion did not represent a resource to which one turned, but an opportunity to construct one’s engagement in public life.

Both, the new public roles of religion and their discursive employment, beg the question as to what was happening with religious commitment and engagement at the individual level. What did religion mean for individuals engaged in religious activism? More particularly, what did it mean when the religious terrain was changing rapidly? How did actors use religious discourse to navigate the terrain?

Using the case of Islamic activism, this conference examines these questions through a close examination of biographies. It calls for papers that will focus on individuals who have participated in one or more Islamic revival groups and movements over the last four decades. They should capture self-reflexive views of Islamists as they recall their engagement, their doubts, and transformations. Moreover, they must interrogate in particular the discursive dimension of their participation in a movement characterized by social and political significance.

Participants whose papers are accepted for presentation at the conference will be hosted by the organizers. We can also support a limited number of participants for travel to Cape Town, but we urge presenters to seek assistance from their Universities. Our funds may then be reserved for those who cannot arrange such finance.

Religion, it has been claimed, is generated by our desire to escape from the tyranny of time. Through certain thoughts and practices, people have sought to evade the end that our temporal existence so inevitably seems to lead up to. Religion often circles around the promise of a new beginning - a prosperous life in this world or a renewed existence in the hereafter. In the Abrahamic traditions, humankind is placed at the heart of a cosmic drama that is framed by notions of an absolute beginning, an apocalyptic end, and, beyond that, an eternity that obliterates the boundaries of time. Ritualized activities, furthermore, are often performed as expressions or celebrations of ends and beginnings - of seasons, communities or of phases in an individual's life.

All these matters have attracted the attention of scholars of religion, as has the larger question of whether there can be said to be a beginning or an end of religion in general. Can we - in the darkness of prehistory or in the evolution of human cognition - localise a beginning of religion? And, is it - in a time when theories of secularisation, rationalisation and disenchantment are increasingly put into question - still possible to speak of the decline of religion or of its end?
We are pleased to invite scholars of different disciplines to take part in this conference, by which we hope to stimulate theoretical, methodological and empirical progress within the academic study of religion. Ends and beginnings is the 11th annual conference of EASR (European Association for the Study of Religion). It is a special conference of the IAHR (International Association for the History of Religions) and is organized in collaboration with SSRF (Swedish Association for the History of Religions).
SESSIONS ON ISLAM

11. Traditional Islamic Education: Ends and Beginnings?
Discussed topic linked as it is (legitimately or otherwise) to concerns about identity, extremism and educational attainment. In this panel we seek to discuss the relation between traditional Islamic teaching/learning and challenges posed by globalization and modernization: What is the role and function and value of memorization and rote learning in the age of "google"? How do teachers of confessional/traditional Islamic subjects meet the challenges of modern pedagogy and society? How do they compete in the Islamic formation of young Muslims with the influence of other, electronic sources of knowledge about Islam? To what extent can traditional Islamic education form a respected part of a society's wider education system? In that education has often been in the centre of Islamic reform, what are the major pedagogical trends? How do young Muslim learners negotiate their position in relation to the different pedagogies they experience in Islamic and "mainstream" education? We would like to invite scholars who study Islamic teaching and learning and are interested in these questions to submit papers to our panel.
Jenny Berglund, Södertörn University, Sweden

12. The Validity of Shari'ah in the 21st Century
Abdallah Kheir, Kenyatta University, Kenya

13. Religions in Central Asia and Caucasus: either Tolerance or Threats
The Panel is devoted to the timely questions of historical and contemporary poly-confessional situation in Central Asia and Caucasus. Last decades the issue of religion and the potential threats poses to Central Asian and Caucuses countries – the cross-route of Civilizations and Religions. These historical specifics are the background for the contemporary traditions of tolerance and patience. At the same time, the real threats, every often connected to religion, faced in the Region. Panelists will show historical background and current situation taken part in the Region.
Prof. Dr. Gulnara Mendikulova, World Association of the Kazakhs, Kazakstan

14. Trends in Contemporary Salafi Discourse
Salafism has emerged as a strong and diversified current in contemporary Islam. We can distinguish different kinds of Salafism with varying views on how to implement dogma. Some advocate complete segregation. Some take part in elections. Yet others call for a global jihad to convert the world to their version of Islam. We invite papers on Salafism related to various themes, such as politics, faith, inter-religious communication, violence, utopian struggle, worldview, aqidah etc.
Susanne Olsson, Södertörn University, Sweden

16. "The Best of Epochs is Mine" - Returning to the Origins in Contemporary Islam
The panel invites papers on Muslims activists who joined movements that claim to go back to the origins of Islam. These include Salafis, modernists and postmodernists. The aim of the panel is to reflect on deep biographies of men and women who turn to such movements, with a desire to reach or realize a pure, unadulterated meaning and practice of Islam. Comparative cases will highlight meanings of Islam that have been ignored in the social and political implications of these movements.
Abdulkader Tayob, University of Cape Town, South Africa

17. Perspectives of the Dialogues between Christians and Muslims
Dialogues between Christians and Muslims at the court of Abbasid caliphs. -Second Vatican Council (Dignitatis Humanae, Lumen Gentium, Nostra Aetate) -Activity by John Paul II including the political alliance with Bhenazir Bhutto and other Muslim leaders. Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, president of the Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue, a prominent person in the recent Vatican administration, maybe the follower to Benedict XVI. Secular aspect e.g. peacemaking.
Sandor Foldvari, Debrecen University, Hungary

18. Egypt and the Arab Spring
The popular revolution in Egypt has given rise to new and unexpected developments in terms of the political role of religion. The Muslim Brotherhood has emerged as a strong political power. At the same time, conservative Salafis formed political parties. Copts are torn between forming own parties or align with others. The rising role of religion in post-revolutionary Egypt raises several important questions dealt with in this session.
