Conference Choosing one’s language Middle-Eastern Literatures facing multilinguism
Is a writer’s choice of language synonymous with his inscription within a dominant literary tradition attached to this language? Can an Arab, Turk or Israeli writer express, reflect or simply observe collectiveness in a language other than the one he was raised in, learned how to grasp the world with, and other than the one spoken and used by the majority of his fellow citizen? When choosing the language of his personal heritage or a language he feels to be a tool of distinction or ensuring globalization, is he condemned to express nothing beyond his single self? Does he find himself summoned to follow narrative and cultural traditions that might be foreign to (part of) his identity? In contemporary post-colonial societies of the Middle-East, one must examine the significance of using the “Language of the Nation”, and what derives from borrowing another language, whether because it bears a promise of universality or fidelity to an origin. “Language and identity” is already a central topic in francophone studies dealing with Maghreb and Sub-saharian Africa, as well as in post-colonial studies on English-language literature in the Indian sub-continent or in the Caribbean. However, Middle-Eastern literature studies have seldom taken language choice into account. Is Albert Cossery’s or Ahdaf Soueif’s Cairo different from Mahfuz’s or Aswani’s because of the language chosen? Does writing in Russian turn the Israeli writer into a stranger to the Nation he chose? For identity is necessarily a complex notion, the aim of this conference is to examine the possible “splitting of the pronoun” whenever a writer chooses “his” language. All those questions call for a comparative perspective so as to observe whether and how narrative techniques are informed and determined by linguistic selection. In the case of Middle-Eastern literatures, the question of (self-)censorship and the limits of expression might explain the choice of an “other” language: but is this to suggest transgression can only be uttered in the language of the Other? Yet linguistic choice might also be linked to the national language’s ambiguous status, between sacredness and derision… Beyond the contrastive angle, the conference’s aim is also to question academic traditions followed in the study, criticism, teaching and historiography of Arabic, Turkish or Hebrew Literatures: Can modern Arabic fiction be taught without any knowledge of other-language novels produced in the region? Can one seriously suppose a total absence of communication between multilingual literatures born within a same culture, country or region?

De la Bible et des traditions juives au Coran et aux traditions islamiques;

Créations
	et continuités médiévales: la problématique des nouveaux genres et
	formes arabes de leurs transformations et de leurs expressions
	hébraïques;

Circulation, traduction et extension: de l’arabe, via l’hébreu, vers l’Europe;
