candidates studying here in the past five years, highly educated
immigrants face worse job prospects than their Canadian-born
counterparts. This is likely to cause many to leave the country in the
long term. In the 2010-11 academic year, 1,395 of 5,907 or nearly 24% of PhD
candidates were international students, according to Statistics Canada. Read more...

that the rich were stealing the brains of developing countries. In the
case of Spain where doctorate production has grown exponentially,
however, the evidence regarding the destination of foreign doctoral
students does not support that view. Spain saw a six-fold increase in the number of doctorate awarded from
1978-04, up from 1,117 to 7,474, according to an OECD 2009 review of
Spanish tertiary education.
This rose to around 8,000 in 2010, according to Eurostat figures cited
in a report by the organisation Cooperation on Doctoral Education
between Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe, which placed Spain fifth
in terms of European production. Provisional information from Data and Figures from the Spanish University System 2012-2013,
showed that nearly 24% of these 8,000 doctorates were earned by foreign
students of whom 62% were from Latin America and 27% from Europe, with
only 4% from Asia-Oceania and 4% from Africa. Read more...

power a year ago was to repeal an order by its predecessors that had
tightened up residence and employment rules for non-European students
and graduates in France.
PhD students in France
In recent times, France has slipped in the rankings of most popular
countries for international students, from third place (it claimed) to
fifth. But the nation remains, with Germany, one of the two most popular
non-Anglophone countries for foreigners – and, unlike in many other host
countries, fees in France are low: for a doctorate, only €380 (US$500) a
year. About 70,000 PhD students are studying in France, of whom 41% are from
abroad. Many of them traditionally stay after they have finished their
studies – 24% of the 6.4 million PhD (or equivalent) graduates living in
France are foreign. Read more...

argued that "doing a PhD” was often a waste of time. However, this
pessimism does not reflect the experience of all students, as evidenced
by increasing numbers of doctoral students from the global South heading
to the advanced economies of the North in the past 20 years. Many source countries for doctoral students are still experiencing the
growing pains of economic development and qualitative maturity; their
higher education systems are not immune to these challenges. Read more...

A more globalised and more diversified research setup will provide more opportunities for research collaborations and will widen the pool of talent. A bigger and more culturally diverse set of researchers can only be a benefit to all. Research is becoming an ever more global activity. Scientists all over the world can share data, communicate and travel with unprecedented ease. At the same time, countries such as China, India, Brazil and South Africa are emerging as major investors in research, building capacity to match the traditional research centres in the European Union (EU), Japan and the United States. China now produces more academic papers than any country apart from the US. Read more...

Foreign students accounted for 37% of newly enrolled doctoral candidates in Sweden in 2011 and 24% in Denmark, both representing steep rises over the previous decade. The proportion of foreigners awarded a doctorate in 2011 was 33% in Norway, 29% in Denmark, 22% in Sweden and 14% in Finland. Iceland awarded 51 doctoral degrees that year: 19 to foreigners or 38% of the total. Read more...

that has brought benefits to both countries. Mexican migration to the
US is often thought to be a movement of people with low education and
income levels, but emigration of highly qualified Mexicans is also
significant. According to 2010 census data, almost 140,000 Mexicans held a doctorate
degree that year while more than 21,000 Mexicans with PhDs were living
in the US. Thus, the number of Mexican immigrants with doctorates in the
US represented 15% of all those with doctorates in Mexico. Read more...

aims to position the nation among the top five global scientific powers
by 2020. This cannot be achieved without qualified academics,
researchers and scientists, yet India has to contend with large numbers
of postgraduate students leaving to complete PhDs or postdocs – a
majority to the US – and staying away to pursue a career. Now the government and industry, along with India’s elite universities
and technical institutions, have joined to implement a series of
measures to stem the tide while also encouraging large numbers of
researchers to return home. India’s problem starts with the already small pool of students who
choose to do a PhD. Between 1991 and 2001, the number of doctorates
awarded increased by only 20% compared with an 85% jump in China. Read more...

about 50 per cent would you still go into that field? That’s the
situation of many PhD students in Canada who know, from watching
graduating peers compete for tenure-track or post-doctoral fellowships,
that the demand for professors has slowed down much faster than the
production of PhD graduates. This mismatch was at the heart of the
report released last week by the Higher Education Quality Council of
Ontario which called on students, that powerful constituency, to
“insist” that universities keep track of and release graduation,
attrition and job placement numbers. Read more...

The plan is to roll out the free course to other universities to raise

the importance of scholarship, supervisor practices and supervisor
processes – and started when this year’s semester began in February. Read more...

international students world-wide, offering (amongst other educational
opportunities) top-quality doctoral programmes, ACA members Campus
France (project coordinator), DAAD, Nuffic, the British Council, and
the Institute of International Education (IIE) joined forces with
Eurodoc (The European Council of Doctoral Candidates and Junior Researchers) in 2010 and launched the PromoDoc project.
This joint initiative, funded under the Erasmus Mundus Programme, aims
to “improve information about doctoral study and to facilitate access to
doctoral-level programmes in Europe amongst students in third
countries, especially in the targeted industrialised countries and
territories of Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan
and the USA”.
Within the scope of PromoDoc, a series of
activities are being organised to promote doctoral study in Europe such
as information tools, a video clip, a network of “ambassadors”,
participation in fairs and presentations on doctoral study. The next
promotional event will be held in South Korea and will consist of targeted
appointments between European higher education institutions and
research institutes and potential South Korean doctoral candidates. This recruitment event is a sequel to the PromoDoc gathering that took place in Japan last year. The South Korea event will take place over four days, i.e. 28 and 29 September 2013 in Seoul and 1 and 2 October in Busan.
There will be student information sessions in the morning and scheduled
appointments between South Korean students and representatives from the
EU in the afternoon. European higher education institutions and
research institutes interested in participating in the event can apply
via the project website. PromoDoc.

Tuesday 11 June 2013 11.00 – 4.00
Professor Pam Denicolo, University of Surrey
Dr Dawn Duke, University of Surrey
The purpose of this workshop is to examine the doctoral viva process and experience in order to help doctoral researchers with their preparation for it.
‘Success’ in a doctoral viva is the product not only of writing a good thesis, but also of being well prepared for the viva. The doctoral viva can, however, be shrouded in mystery. The workshop will aim to demystify the viva by exploring the range of purposes served by the viva, how the viva works procedurally and the criteria generally imposed by institutions and those used by examiners. Some insights into the examiners’ perspectives will be provided to further shed light on the process.
Advice will be provided about intellectual preparation, practical preparation and emotional preparation, including how to respond productively to the range of possible outcomes. Participants will be expected to engage in activities that will help them prepare for this special occasion so should come prepared to discuss their research with a lay but intelligent audience.
Pam is an Emeritus Professor of Professional and Postgraduate Education at the University of Reading and a Consultant Professor of Researcher Education and Training at the University of Surrey. Having previously published widely in academic journals and produced a range of books and SRHE Guides on teaching, learning and research, Pam now co-edits and writes for a book series with Sage, Success in Research, aimed at supporting early career researchers in their endeavours, and a series with Sense, Critical Issues in the Future of Learning and Teaching aimed at supporting educators across all sectors but especially those in Higher, Further and Professional Education.
discusses the scholarly use of social media by PhD researchers through a
mix-methods study in the UK. Yimei Zhu is a 3rd year Sociology PhD
student in University of Manchester. Her research looks at the new forms
of scholarly communication and whether researchers support these new
practices. Her research interests include scholarly use of social
media, open access to publication and data, social capital, trust and
online communities. This entry draws on the article: Zhu and Procter (2012) ‘Use of blogs, Twitter and Facebook by PhD Students for Scholarly Communication: A UK study, presented at China New Media Communication Association Annual Conference, Macao International Conference at 6 -8 Dec 2012.
Some seniors researchers believe that using social media is a waste
of time and only those young PhD students who were born into the digital
world as the ‘Facebook generation’ have the time to play around with
new media tools. However, PhD students and early career researchers who
have not secured professional status and reputation should really be
focusing on doing research and getting published in peer-reviewed
journals. Would the playground of social media waste their previous time
doing ‘real’ research? Can research students use the new media tools to
benefit their work and future career?
To explore these issues, we interviewed seven PhD students based in
two UK universities and conducted a case study analysing contents from
two live chat events on Twitter with the themed hashtag of #phdchat, in
which participants discussed various issues around blogging about
research. We found that blogs, Twitter and Facebook are among the most
popular social media tools being used by researchers. Read more...

Why You Need a Mentor

Not an academic adviser, but a true mentor—someone who has an interest in helping you develop your career path, combined with the seniority and perspective to be helpful. In my opinion, every college student and every professional needs one, and it’s preferable if you don’t report directly to your mentor. A mentor can explain the subtleties of your chosen career path to you, and can help you navigate rough spots along the way. I called my undergraduate mentor when, in my second year of graduate school, I suddenly didn’t have Ph.D. candidacy, even though I had jumped through every hoop successfully. “Sounds like an adviser problem,” my mentor said. “You need to ask your adviser specifically why you didn’t get candidacy, and then you need to ask at least two other professors in the department to be honest with you.”
I followed his advice and found that my adviser had, in fact, sabotaged my candidacy (and as I looked at the professor’s history, I found that he had a very poor record of graduating female Ph.D. candidates). So it was clear that I needed to change advisers. Read more...
