The NTEU National Indigenous Forum: Bargaining – What do we want?

The theme for Forum 2013 is: Bargaining – What do we want?
Indigenous Forum 2013 will have a focus on the current Bargaining Round, in particular, the National Indigenous Claim incorporating numeric targets for maintaining and increasing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employment in the Australian higher education sector.
A number of institutions have already finalised their negotiations for Round 6, while in the main, other institutions have either served their log of claims or are in the throes of negotiations.
While negotiations take place, the looming Federal Election in September presents the possibility for political change; we need to consider what this political change will bring and how it may influence bargaining outcomes?
This year’s Forum will also discuss the 2012 Review of Higher Education Access and Outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People (Behrendt review), in particular how the new membership of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Higher Education Advisory Council (formerly IHEAC) will seek to implement the 35 Review recommendations.
Indigenous Forum 2013 offers delegates the opportunity to provide input into the future development of NTEU Indigenous higher education policy and strategies, relating to Indigenous employment, student income support, research, teaching and social justice issues.
Registration — All those attending Indigenous Forum 2013 must submit a Registration form to the National Office by COB 1st May 2013. Due to the need to coordinate bus travel to and from the airport it is important to get your registrations in by the due date.</dc:description>

Johnson">Tammy R. Johnson. In recent years, there has been increasing interest among admission officers regarding the identification of LGBT students on campus. Reliable statistics about LGBT populations on campuses across the country are all but non-existent, and many progressive institutions are aiming to remedy that problem. It is a growing concern: How can schools provide outreach and support (and increase retention rates) for LGBT students if this at-risk population continues to be invisible? Likewise, LGBT campus groups are almost uniformly in favor of collecting reliable data that will document the presence of LGBT students on campus, which would help these groups advocate more successfully for funding and support. In the research-based environments of most college campuses, there is little opposition to collecting data to identify LGBT students. Faculty and staff who are even remotely familiar with the unique struggles faced by many LGBT students understand the justifications for identification. Disagreement usually arises, however, when campuses begin to wrestle with the question of how to collect the data. Read more...

An Institutional Responsibility: Tracking Retention & Academic Success of Out LGBT Students

Ensuring that students progress efficiently from orientation to commencement has become the focus, and rightfully the responsibility, of many campus administrators. Increasing student retention and graduation rates is challenging work, unless colleges and universities are willing to raise their admissions standards.
Many institutions that are not able to adjust the academic profile of their entering class have smartly disaggregated their retention data to see where the roadblocks exist that stop students from succeeding. In that process, it has become clear that aspects of student’s identity contribute to their success just as much as their academic preparation or study skills. But, in the process of designing complex retention interventions, institutions determined to achieve success for their students are missing key aspects of student’s identity, particularly identity based on sexual orientation. This oversight potentially makes some of the retention efforts futile.
There is no panacea that all campuses can adopt to resolve this issue. Woodard et al. correctly stated that like politics, all retention issues are local (Woodard et al., 2001). What works on one campus, is not likely to be exactly replicated on another campus. The logic is simple. As much as our campuses are the same, they are really very different from each other. Each campus has its own student body, admission requirements, academic policies, tuition and fee structures, and student services that support the graduation goal. Even institutions located across the street from each other compare like the proverbial apples and oranges. Read more...</dc:description>

That was the central finding of an independent review released by the institution on Friday, according to The Post and Courier, a South Carolina newspaper. The college’s investigation stemmed from a 2007 allegation that accused a
former cadet of sexually abusing boys while he served as a counselor at
the Citadel’s summer camp. The incidents of abuse reportedly took place
five years earlier, in 2002. The former cadet, a Citadel graduate, is
now serving a 50-year prison term after pleading guilty last summer to
charges that he had molested boys in Charleston, S.C., the newspaper
reported. The college has previously said that it regretted not doing more about the incidents, which prompted lawsuits against the institution. Read more...

The report, That’s what she said: Women students’ experiences of lad culture in higher education, released on 8 March to coincide with International Women’s Day, found that nights out and sports teams were hotspots for “lad culture”, defined as a “pack” mentality and the use of sexist, misogynist and homophobic “banter”.
White applicants to some of the most competitive courses are twice as likely to get places.
Of British students applying, 25.7% received an offer compared to 17.2% of students from ethnic minorities. MP David Lammy said the figures suggested an 'institutional bias'. Oxford University was yesterday accused of ‘institutional bias’ against ethnic minorities amid striking differences in different racial groups’ entry rates. White applicants to some of the most competitive courses are up to twice as likely to get places even with the same A-level grades, according to data released under the Freedom of Information Act.
Overall, of the white, British students applying in 2010 and 2011, 25.7 per cent received an offer to attend the university, compared to 17.2 per cent of students from ethnic minorities. The gaps were most marked in medicine and economics and management but there was statistically no difference in success rates between white and non-white students applying for law. Read more...</dc:description>

Conrad Liveris asks why there aren't more women in leadership roles in
our universities, when there are more women graduating?
Liveris notes that tertiary education is a haven of activity for
women, as both staff and students, but it obvious that equity issues
still remain:
Of the nearly 1.1 million students at university 57% are women, making up 53% of all tertiary students in Australia.
Women have already made the government's target for 40% of people
holding a bachelor's degree, with men still in the mid-30% range. While
the above stats reference a 2008 study on such gender breakdowns,
there's been little evidence to indicate how wide the gap currently is.
The tertiary education sector has a distinct focus on the gender balance
with students, but more research needs to be done to give female
academics a practical pathway to leadership.
Gender segregation in higher education

<dc:description>AS SAUDI ARABIA is aggressively marching into a liberalized market structure, more job opportunities are being created in the expanding private sector for both Saudi young men and women.
It seems that the new economic changes are associated by less rigid employment policies that include a mixed labor environment. For example, the government's decision forcing business owners to employ women in traditionally male dominated sales jobs in shops and malls across the country is going full steam ahead and is no longer taboo.
However, as far back as the 1990's, studies by international organizations such as The International Labor Organization and the World Bank have indicated that the Saudi education system in general was deteriorating, and failing to properly prepare young Saudi men and women for the local job market. Now a new shortcoming could be added to the decaying education system: Failing to meet the new labor structure by systematically preparing them for mixed gender surroundings.
It is no secret that gender segregation in education has been the status quo in Saudi Arabia since public education for females was officially introduced in the early 1960's. Interestingly, the Kingdom is the only Muslim country in the world that still does not have coed schooling in all education levels, from primary school to university. Read more...</dc:description>

Universities will be told they should recruit more white, working-class boys in the wake of figures showing a massive slump in applications from men for courses.
The Universities minister David Willetts wants white, working-class teenage boys put in the same category as students from other disadvantaged communities and ethnic minorities – as groups that should be targeted for recruitment.
The move has the potential to create conflict with Britain's independent schools if universities – as a result – use it to discriminate against middle-class applicants in order to curry favour with the university access watchdog, the Office for Fair Access. Read more...</dc:description>

The number of boys applying to university courses has fallen dramatically and more must be done to ensure they sign up, David Willetts argued. The universities minister said there was no reason why white working class boys should not be targeted in the same way as other disadvantaged groups by the Office for Fair Access (Offa).
The university access watchdog "can look at a range of disadvantaged groups – social class and ethnicity, for instance – when it comes to access agreements, so I don't see why they couldn't look at white, working-class boys," he said.
The minister plans to discuss the issue of making white working class boys a target group for recruitment in university access agreements with Professor Les Ebdon, the director of Offa. Universities have to sign the agreements to receive permission to charge higher fees. Read more...</dc:description>
