 <dc:description>

Learning & Teaching Foreign Languages : Behaviourism

The learning of foreign, or second, languages is examined from four
different perspectives: this resource presents a behaviourist approach.

The theory is presented in terms of general learning, then as it
applies to second language learning, including major figures and key
concepts in behaviourism. Learning activities are proposed throughout
the resource, including illustrations from the second language
classroom. Comprehension of the material can be checked via quizzes and
reflective activities, and a chronological overview is afforded by a
clickable timeline. Users can also directly access the three other
theories (cognitivism, constructivism, and socio-constructivism). The
resource is relevant to undergraduate and graduate students of foreign
languages and/or linguistics and may be used in pre- or in-service
training of language teachers at all levels (primary, secondary,
university).

Yesterday, the Open University released ‘The History of English in 10
Minutes,’ a witty animated sequence that takes you through 1600 years
of linguistic history. The Vikings gave us “give” and “take.”
Shakespeare added another 2,000 words and expressions to the mix. The
British Empire (see video above) then brought the evolving English
language to new lands, creating new varieties of English worldwide. And
so the story continues. You can find this series featuring the voice of
Clive Anderson on iTunes or YouTube. This resource provides an overview of four different theories of teaching and learning foreign or second languages:
- Behaviourism
- Cognitivism
- Constructivism
- Socio-constructivism

Four approaches to teaching and learning languages are presented first

theories. The resource is relevant to undergraduate and graduate
students of foreign languages and/or linguistics and may be used in pre-

including illustrations from the second language classroom.

resource.
