Cependant elle est moins connue pour sa créativité de pensée qui n'en est pas moins réelle. La Corée n'a introduit les caractères chinois, et avec eux la culture philosophique, que dans les premiers siècles de l'ère chrétienne. Ainsi les Coréens ont-ils été confrontés à la tâche redoutable d'assimiler des idées et une sagesse qui s'étaient développées pendant presque mille ans. Cette présentation souhaite remonter à la période antique coréenne pour mieux saisir comment se sont faites la naissance et l'évolution des idées confucéennes au cours de l'histoire. On observera d'abord la période pré-philosophique puis le temps des Trois Royaumes lorsque le confucianisme était dans une relation ouverte avec le bouddhisme et le taoïsme. On prendra en considération l'évolution des idées sous la période de Koryô avant que ne se fasse au 13e siècle l'introduction du néo-confucianisme qui fleurit durant la dynastie Yi fondée en 1392.
