Today, on 24 May 2012, the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning
(UIL) will be celebrating the 60th anniversary of UNESCO’s presence in
Hamburg.
The anniversary celebration will highlight the Institute’s
impact on education policy and programmes throughout the 60 years of its
work on lifelong learning, focusing on adult education and literacy in
all world regions.
The festivities include an official reception by the Senate of the
Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, Germany, on 24 May. Ms. Irina
Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, will be a special guest at this
formal opening of the anniversary events, which will be followed by an
international press conference.
The wider public is also invited to take part in the anniversary
celebrations through two events in cooperation with the University of
Hamburg. The first will be a public lecture addressing the issue of
“Responding to Global Challenges through Lifelong Learning” in the
afternoon of 24 May (the lecture can be viewed online at http://lecture2go.uni-hamburg.de).
A welcome reception at the Institute’s premises (on invitation only)
will round off the first day of celebrations. The following day, an
international expert seminar will address “The Role of Universities in
Promoting Lifelong Learning”.
